This past Thursday was the first day of school, and the first day of my second year teaching with 1:1 Chromebooks. I was excited to meet my new students and right away introduced myself as their "geeky, tech-obsessed" teacher and to show them around their new classroom because I have recently acquired a SMART Kapp board and brand new, top of the line SMART Board 6065 (interactive flat panel), so my classroom looks beautiful and super high-tech. I'm really proud of this - I've worked hard to get these things and couldn't be more excited to use these new tools in my classroom.
The first day of school was busy and filled with introductions and paperwork, so there wasn't really time to get out Chromebooks and play, but my students' eyes LIT UP when I told them that I had no problem with them using their cell phones and devices as tools to help their learning! They've never been told this before, but I wanted them to know right away that I'm pro-technology, as long as it's being used appropriately. I think it set a good tone.
The second day we started right off with Chromebooks and after configuring settings and bookmarking some pages, I gave them their first assignment: a fun geography/math/Google search challenge I created in Google Earth Tour Builder. Have you used Tour Builder? If not, it's a fantastic tool from Google Geo that allows you to create a tour made up of stop anywhere in the world. You can add text and photos to each stop for students. The applications for this are endless, but for this first introductory activity, I took students on a tour of world landmarks and asked a question they'd have to answer correctly before being able to go on to the next stop (answers were recorded in a linked Google Form with data validation). Check out my activity here - and even play it yourself! The teachers I shared it with had fun doing it, too!
My students ended the day excited about sixth grade and using technology, and I consider that a successful first week of school.
While I don't teach geography, I have led two international student trips. This could be a great tool to integrate into some of the pre-trip meetings with students as we plan our next overseas adventure. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like it, and that's a great idea! I'm relatively new to using Google Geo tools, so I love hearing ideas about how others might use them. Thank you for sharing!
DeleteGenius idea!
DeleteThis is a really cool tool! I'm sure I could work this into our science curriculum in some way. Thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteGreat - share your tour if you create one! I haven't ever used it for Science (YET!).
DeleteWhat a awesome tool! But the real reason I am commenting is to commend you for a job well done. Congratulations and thank you for getting your students excited to learn. This is not always an easy task. Keep up the good work, and good luck the rest of the year!
ReplyDeleteWow, thank you so much! Getting them excited to learn is half (if not more!) the battle.
DeleteThis is so much fun. What a great activity to get students excited about learning. Good work!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm glad you like it!
DeleteIt sounds like you definitely did a great job of starting things off right, Amanda. When I think about the journeys (literal and figurative) that you will take the kids on because of your understanding and inspired use of technology I get so excited!!! I can't wait to hear more as the year goes on...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteGreat sharing and I know my kids would love to be in your class! What a great start and if I can pull off the 1 to 1 pilot in my class in a few weeks, I will be borrowing this great idea. Fantastic use of cross curricular as well. I can see lots of possibilities. We are an international school and kids could create their own about their home countries. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of kids in an international school creating their own - that's brilliant! Those in non-international schools could have students create them for country or state reports, too! I'm inspired!
DeleteGreat activity! Sounds very engaging. Best of luck with your school year.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWhat a great way to start the school year! I have never heard of Google Earth Tour Builder but I did check out your lesson. Wow! This is a great resource and fun activity for the students. I am going to pass along this resource to our Social Studies teacher. She would love to have our 7th graders do something similar to this. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to have been able to share it with you since you've never heard of it!
